After weeks of packing and getting ready, moving day is finally here. Whether this is your first rental or you’re moving to a new place, staying organised will help things go smoothly.

Before You Leave Your Old Property

Before you leave for the last time, take a moment to check that everything is finished. If your tenancy agreement requires it, clean the property and make sure you’ve removed all your belongings. Don’t forget to check cupboards, lofts, sheds, and garages for anything left behind. Take final readings for your gas, electricity, and water meters if needed. Take photos for your records and let your utility providers know the numbers. Return all keys as your landlord or letting agent has asked. If you have a check-out inspection, be sure to attend if needed.

Collecting the Keys

When your tenancy starts, you can collect your keys from your letting agent or landlord. Bring photo ID if asked, and make sure you’ve sorted out any paperwork or payments ahead of time to avoid delays. Before you leave the office, double-check that you have all the keys, fobs, or access cards you’ll need for your new place.

When You Arrive at Your New Home

Before you bring in your furniture, take a few minutes to look around and check the place. Take photos of each room, especially if you spot anything not listed on the inventory. This gives you a good record of the property’s condition when you moved in. Find out where the stopcock, fuse box, and boiler are so you know where to go in an emergency. Check that the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors work, and let someone know right away if there’s a problem.

Record Your Meter Readings

As soon as you move in, write down the gas, electricity, and water meter readings. Send these readings to your utility suppliers and your letting agent if they ask. This way, you’ll only pay for the energy you use from the start of your tenancy.

Unpack the Essentials First

Instead of opening all your boxes at once, begin with the essentials. Unpack things like bedding, toiletries, kitchen basics, chargers, medications, and important documents first. Having these handy will make your first night a lot more comfortable.

Update Your Address

Don’t forget to update your address with organisations such as:

  • Your bank and credit card providers
  • DVLA (driving licence and vehicle registration)
  • Employer
  • GP and dentist
  • Insurance providers
  • Mobile phone provider
  • Online shopping accounts

You might also want to set up Royal Mail’s Redirection service if you haven’t already.

Check Your Inventory

If you have an inventory report, read it carefully. If you spot anything wrong or any damage that isn’t listed, let your letting agent know within the time given in your tenancy agreement. Keeping good records now can help you avoid problems later.

Meet Your Neighbours

Saying hello to your neighbours can help you feel part of your new community. They might also share helpful local tips like bin collection days, parking, and nearby shops.

Make It Feel Like Home

After you’ve unpacked the essentials, take your time setting up your new space. Adding personal touches such as photos, cushions and plants can quickly make your new place feel like home. Be sure to check your tenancy agreement before you hang pictures or make any changes to the decor.

Final Thoughts

Moving day is the start of an exciting new chapter. If you stay organised, keep good records, and report any problems quickly, your tenancy will get off to a great start. If you have any questions after you move in, feel free to contact your letting agent or landlord. They’re there to help you settle in and make your tenancy go smoothly.
